Access to additional regional customers was facilitated when Knight Hawk reopened this loading facility at the Mississippi River’s mile post 105 south of Chester, Ill. The property remained idle through most of the 1990s until it was reopened in the fall 1999. Knight Hawk converted it to a truck-river facility. Coal previously was shipped there by rail.
Lone Eagle features a mile of barge docking cells. A 1,200 hp tugboat and a 500 hp tugboat are used to maneuver 50 barges a week that are on the ready for direct shipment.
The facility has a 2.7 million tons-per-year capacity. To date, more than 6 million tons of coal has moved through it. The single-shift operation employs nine people including three river pilots. Boats and fleeting service is manned 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week.
