Knight Hawk commenced underground mining Jan. 1, 2008 at Royal Falcon in the No. 6 seam. To access the 10-foot seam of coal, more than 3 million cubic yards of earth was dug 175 feet below the surface.

Conventional underground mining is being performed that in 2009 will include two operational units employing Joy 1414 continuous miners.

Coal quality varies between the south and north areas with approximately 1.2 percent sulfur and 11,800 BTUs in the north and approximately 2.5 percent sulfur and 11,200 BTUs in the south.
