CARBON RECOVERY

Coal mining has been a core industry in Southern Illinois since the 1800s. Many of the mines in the area started using wash plants to refine their products in the mid- to late- 20th century. As technology has improved over the years it is now possible to recover some of that product that was considered waste from those older wash plants. This product is generally referred to as carbon in the industry.

Knight Hawk is fortunate to operate in an area where several of these older sites exist. Through a related party, Knight Hawk Coal is the primary customer of two of these carbon recovery facilities – Mine 21 near Sesser, IL, Jordan Mine near Willisville, IL and BC Carbon near Du Quoin, IL These operations retrieve carbon fines and coarse material that were left for waste by the Old Ben 21 and Captain Mines respectively. This low-cost coal can be a benefit to Knight Hawk’s customers as Knight Hawk is able to purchase and blend these products with its other coals to reduce overall prices. In addition, the Mine 21 product also has a low sulfur content which helps Knight Hawk to meet lower sulfur blends its customers may require.
