Knight Hawk acquired the Red Hawk mine in 2003. There are 50 miners working to recover 500,000 tons of coal annually. Knight Hawk splits the seam to provide higher BTU and lower BTU products while maintaining similar sulfur contents. In 2011, Red Hawk earned the Illinois Mining Institute’s award for safety among state surface mines. The mine is supported by an on-site jig plant for processing coal. This mine is currently idle.
